Anticipation was high for Jordan Peele Nopeafter his previous two (critically acclaimed) forays into the horror genre: 2017 get out 2019 We. The details of NopeThe plot of was intentionally sparse, as the writer/director wants the film to be an unexpected experience for his audience. Fear not – the film has been screened, and now perhaps we can glean a little more information on early reactions to the film, though we maintain that delicious fear of the unknown.
Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer star in Nope as siblings who begin to see something (but what??) in the sky above their ranch. Aliens of some sort would be a good guess at hand as to what is piloting the UFO and causing all the creepy incidents teased in the trailer. CinemaBlend’s Sean O’Connell shared his reaction to exclusive footage of Nopewhich screened at CinemaCon 2022 earlier this year, and now CinemaBlend’s Eric Eisenberg has seen the movie for himself, Tweeter only with NopeJordan Peele went 3 for 3:
With #Nope, Jordan Peele continues his brilliant run of crafting detailed, layered, riveting horror films, and it’s awesome. It’s a summer show on show, and while there are many flavors mixed in, it’s a particularly great homage to Jaws. Peele is 3 for 3. pic.twitter.com/aFKg2uTZ5vJuly 19, 2022
Fandango’s Erik Davis praises the film, which he says grabs you from the start with its strong storytelling and leaves you wanting to talk about it long after. It’s apparently unlike any UFO movie we’ve ever seen:
Jordan Peele’s #Nope is one of the best movies I’ve seen this year! It’s scary and fierce, but also very funny and unlike any UFO movie you’ve ever seen. It’s a very unique and VERY entertaining horror epic full of crazy surprises and an unforgettable performance from Keke Palmer pic.twitter.com/iua9HPt0RGJuly 19, 2022
POC Culture says Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer are so good as a sibling duo, and Steven Yeun shines as well. While the story may not be as strong as Jordan Peele’s previous two films, the social commentary is as poignant as you’d hope, and Peele remains one of this reviewer’s favorite filmmakers:
I saw #NopeMovieI LOVE this amazing cast! It’s Jordan Peele’s biggest show to date. Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya are perfect as a sibling duo, Yeun shines on screen and Perea is a DELICIOUS! #NOPE pic.twitter.com/W2WPKnLnQBJuly 19, 2022
Heather Wixson of Daily Dead News tweets that Nope completely exceeded his expectations. She names Keith David and Michael Wincott as things she loves about this “absolutely phenomenal” summer movie:
So #NopeMovie is absolutely phenomenal in so many ways. Perfectly blends a sci-fi spectacle with a story that also feels like a Hollywood reckoning and blew my expectations away. Beautifully shot, the sound mix is thunderous and the cast shines. Love love adored him. pic.twitter.com/qdcZIvsX5TJuly 19, 2022
Simon Thompson says Jordan Peele is taking a big swing with Nope, and it was well worth taking, as this reviewer felt challenged and eager for more of all that Peele has to offer us next. Watch this movie on the biggest screen possible, says Thompson:
Jordan Peele’s Nope is his most confident, free and potentially controversial take to date. Swapping the exclamation points of horror for the question marks of science fiction is less fear. With hints from Close Encounters, Jaws, and more, #NopeMovie is a real puzzle box. pic.twitter.com/Ny3EVaLTqWJuly 19, 2022
Philly Mag’s Ernest Owens says “Run, don’t walk” to Jordan Peele’s latest offer and, like a number of other viewers, praises Keke Palmer’s performance:
#NOPEMovie isn’t what you expect and the trailer doesn’t do it justice. Jordan Peele does the unimaginable – again. RUN, DON’T WALK TO SEE IT THIS WEEKEND. EXCELLENT ! GIVE KEKE PALMER ALL AWARDS CONSIDERATION THIS YEAR.July 19, 2022
Without giving away too much (or anything) about the plot, these early reactions have me even more excited for Nope hits theaters Friday, July 22. Jordan Peele said his films were designed to be viewed multiple times, with Easter eggs layered all over it. He’s also talked about the mischievous pleasure he derives from scaring his audience, so all signs indicate that moviegoers will be delighted when Nope hits the cinemas.
We’ll also know a bit more when the movie reviews come out on Wednesday, so be sure to check back on CinemaBlend for our review.
