USWNT vs. Canada score: Alex Morgan scores cup winner, USA clinches Olympic and Gold Cup berths

The United States Women’s National Team defeated Canada in the Concacaf W Championship Final 1-0 on Monday night in Monterrey, Mexico. Alex Morgan scored the team’s only goal, a perfectly converted penalty in the 78th minute. Morgan sent a ball to Rose Lavelle on a run into the box, and Allysha Chapman clipped her for a penalty which was confirmed by VAR. Morgan did the rest, sending the goalie the other way with a low finish.

The USWNT’s win over Canada gives the champions a berth at the 2024 Olympics in Paris and a berth in the 2024 W Gold Cup. The win is also the ninth Concacaf title for the United States and the third in a row.

Head coach Vlatko Andonovski continued the player rotation throughout this tournament and into the Championship final, although for the final he only made two adjustments since the semi-final against Costa Ric. The game also featured five players who started against Canada in the semifinals of last summer’s Olympics, which Canada won.

This time around, the United States was the more creative team on offense, recording 17 shots to Canada’s 11. The Americans were more lively throughout the game and were unlucky not to score before the penalty kick. Canada had a few chances to equalize but Alyssa Naeher was ready for the task in front of goal, making the routine saves needed to secure the result and the trophy.

Earlier in the match for third place, Jamaica beat Costa Rica 1-0.
