Prince William and Kate Middleton bring the Earthshot Prize to the United States

After previously announcing that the second Earthshot Awards ceremony will take place in the United States, the couple revealed the exact location on Twitter on Wednesday, sharing that they were visiting the city of Boston in December.

“In 2022 we are back and bringing Earthshot to the United States where we will award the next five winners of the award,” says William, who created the Global Environment Awards in October 2020, in a video on Twitter.

The video then cuts to Red Sox All-Star Xander Bogaerts from the iconic baseball team’s home of Fenway Park.

“And we’ll do it right here in Boston,” Bogaerts said from the outfield.

During their visit to Boston, Massachusetts, the couple will also highlight and celebrate the “inspiring” city for its work in combating the impacts of climate change and building a resilient future, they said in a statement.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were last in the United States in 2014 when they visited New York. Their first visit to the United States together came shortly after their royal wedding in 2011, when they traveled to Los Angeles.

Kate and Prince William, both 40, hinted that an announcement was imminent on July 19, when they shared a question on Twitter.

“Who is good at geography? they wrote. “Complete the sentence: @EarthshotPrize 2022 will be held at _____!”

Inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s famous 10-year goal to land on the moon (known as the Moonshot), the Earthshot Prize aims to promote impactful approaches to the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Fittingly, the announcement that the second awards ceremony will be held in Boston comes on the anniversary of the moon landing.

The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation will serve as host partner alongside Mayor Michelle Wu and the City of Boston.

“There is no Moonshot more important today than fixing the planet and no better place to harness the Moonshot spirit than the city of Boston,” Ambassador Caroline Kennedy said in a statement Monday. hurry. “It is a great tribute to President Kennedy that the Earthshot Prize is partnering with the JFK Library Foundation to host the 2022 ceremony in Boston and inspire a new generation with the possibility of a sustainable future.”

Earlier this month, the Earthshot Prize officially became an independent charity outside of the couple’s Royal Foundation, with Prince William taking on the role of chairman.

“The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated,” William told PEOPLE exclusively after the inaugural Earthshot Prize ceremony in October. “But through the Earthshot Prize, I want to show people around the world why there is reason for hope.”

“Seeing the incredible solutions that have been developed by the first winners of the award – and all of our finalists – shows us that the answers are out there,” said the Duke of Cambridge. “By recognizing these efforts and supporting and evolving them to be the best they can be, we can inspire confidence that a healthier, more sustainable future is within our reach.”

According to former Royal Foundation CEO Jason Knauf, “The challenge the Duke set for himself was, ‘What is the maximum positive personal contribution I can make over the next 10 years in the fight against climate change? What am I going to do in the next decade that means I can look my kids in the eye and say I’ve done my part?” Every aspect of the Prize bears the stamp of his contribution.”
