Unseen X Factor Clip Finally Reveals How Simon Cowell Created One Direction

Exactly 12 years ago, One Direction was created by X Factor judges Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger.

And to celebrate the occasion, the former ITV show has shared a never-before-seen video illustrating how the panel came to the decision to put five solo singers into a band.

In the clip, which was posted to Twitter on Saturday, the judges looked at several portraits of aspiring popstars and decided to create two groups, a boy group and a girl group, from the hopefuls.

The clip, which was first filmed in 2010 after the X Factor bootcamp stages, Simon deliberated on what acts should take place at the judges’ houses.

Clutching a photo of Niall Horan, he said: “He should be in the band. I’m not saying we’re going to do it, but I’d like to imagine it.

Nicole, 44, replies, “Let’s do an imaginary boyband instead of just saying no.”

Putting Niall’s picture on the desk, they start looking through more pictures before coming across Harry Styles.

Sporting his famous curls and side bangs, the then 16-year-old Harry Styles was discussed by the judges and instantly gets Simon’s stamp of approval.

Louis says: ‘We liked it’

Pussycat Doll singer Nicole seems to have a big hand in the decision, and is quick to indicate adding Harry to Niall’s pile, making him the second member of Steal Your Girl.

‘They’re the cutest boy band ever’: Judges first agree on Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson as Nicole gushed: ‘Little girls are going to love them’

She says, ‘Yes, put it with him,’ while Simon nods, ‘Absolutely 100%, Nicole is right.’

Next in the pile of headshots to go was Louis Tomlinson who Simon insists on: “And him”, Louis replying: “They look good together”.

As brunette beauty Nicole raves, “He’s the cutest boyband ever, I love it.” Little girls will love them.

‘They look great together’: Photos of trios being first of five to later become award-winning One Direction, judges then add Zayn Malik and Liam Payne

“They’re just too talented to pull it off, they have the right look and the right charisma on stage.” I think they will be really great in a boy band.

“They’re like little stars and you can’t get rid of the little stars, so you put them all together.”

With the photos of the trio being the first of five to form the award-winning One Direction, the judges later add Zayn Malik and Liam Payne.

After going through some headshots and meeting Liam, Simon said: “He had an amazing audition.”

She says: ‘I don’t think, I think he’s definitely going to shine. He [Liam] could actually be the leader.”

Simon adds: “He thinks he’s better than everyone else” and Louis agreed: “He does Simon, he’s got real confidence in him.”
