Sseason three of dc animated series harley quinn is now streaming on HBO Maxand the showrunners Justin Halpen and Patrick Schumacker sat down with the audiovisual club to catch fans on what to expect – or, in the case of a certain romance luckily left in Harley’s past, what not to expect.

First they touched on a few points of the series ‘ transition from DC Universego to the streamer. “HBO Max stepped in, saved the show,”shelp Schumacker. “From the season three jump, they were like, ‘We love what you do. Don’t try to fix something that isn’t broken. If anything, they’ve been like, ‘Go Go Stronger. If you want to be even bolder, we’re all for it.

Jhat includedto Harley’s romance with Ivy, which had some backlash from Joker and Harley shippers who want them to get back together. Schumacker quickly dismissed that possibility. “We still have the occasional fan reaction to ‘I don’t like Harley and Ivy together. She should come back with the Joker,’ what we will never do. Harley and Ivy will never part ways on the show as long as we have our say. It’s something we never want to touch again.

Centering Harley’s weird love story on her journey was always the plan. Halpern explained, “It was always somewhere we wanted to go, but we wanted to make sure we were telling a story first. How does Harley discover her own identity? What kind of self-discovery is she having after this relationship with the Joker, right? And so if you just had her back in another relationship right after that, because the fans are like, ‘Why aren’t they together right now?would you like that? This person is so screwed up and just got out of a terrible relationship. When in the history of human beings have you ever seen someone leave a terrible relationship they’ve had for a very long time and instantly make the next relationship work perfectly? That doesn’t happen a lot. So we kind of wanted to take our time with that.

And while yes, Halpern admitted they’re “two straight white guys” who run the show, they take responsibility for being responsible for authentically running the story with their team, and added, “We have a lot of people in the room who are gay.”

Schumacker explained: ‘We would probably credit Sabrina Jalees, who was a writer on season two and is queer, with being the one who told us: ‘Please don’t make a coming out story. And she’s the reason we didn’t. I think maybe that was our initial instinct.

Glitch Halperned in, “Which is a perfect example of why when you fill a room with other voices that aren’t afraid to tell you what you’re about to do is dumb, your show comes out better .”
